I'm not good with technology, and I don't take a lot of photos but dammit I love making cake. I mean real cake, the kind of cake you describe as 'moist', even if you shudder at the word. Cake you can't stop eating, even when you can't possibly fit another bite. Cake you have to close your eyes to describe. They don't look perfect, they don't have to. When cake tastes good nobody cares what it looks like. I believe in strong flavours, in cooking with good basic ingredients, with real butter, heavy cream and a helluva lot more chocolate than the recommended amount.

And I don't just make cake. I make cookies so good you can eat a dozen of them, brownies so dense you'll need a nap, caramel slice so sweet your teeth and your eyeballs will hurt as the caramel trickles down your throat but you'll keep eating, pie so golden and buttery you'll have to leave the room to keep yourself from picking the crust off before it's even served, cheesecake that will have you unbuttoning your trousers so you can keep eating. You get the idea.

You name it I'll make it, or I'll try to, or I'll explain why your idea for a cake is terrible and misguided. I don't make fruitcake, because that's disgusting.

The most enjoyable part of baking is being able to share it with people. I love how much happiness baked goods can bring, how people's faces light up when you walk into a room with a tray and how they mark the occasions for which they are produced, birthdays, weddings, baby showers etc. Cake is always welcome. Also, as the title of this website suggests, I bake so I don't have to do other things. Like my PhD. Or my laundry.

I made the decision to start this blog at 1am the day after a good friend's wedding, for which I made the cake. It's going to take me a little while to track down and (figure out how to) upload pictures of cakes of days gone by. Then, I plan to update the blog on a semi regular basis, and upload pictures of baked goods/baking processes, including all the messy details and various inevitable tribulations that come with baking something truly awesome. I am a person who bakes outside the box, someone who will take a basic recipe and make it something truly special.

*I don't know what's going on with this website, I assume I'll figure it out with trial and error. There are some pictures I did not choose, and I definitely do not live in California. If anyone knows how to get rid of this sh*t that'd be helpful.
